Greta Garbo played in this movie in the 1930's and she was blond. Maybe it gave the idea to Diana to become blond just after the remake although she didn't play the same character as Garbo? I don't know... I prefer her reddish brown as usual but people like to try different styles.

Diana dyed her hair blond in the beginning of the 2000s, not after filming "The Painted Veil". hein
