Re: Bright Horizons: The Monochrome World of Emma Peel: 1 (The Avengers on Film)
Rodney Marshall va écrire un autre livre consacré uniquement à la saison 4 : A number of French friends have asked me to return to the monochrome filmed season in order to explore all 26 episodes, (j'en fais partie bien entendu ).
I had got as far as a working title, Bright Horizons,
We have so many incredible people on this forum. Not only lovers of the series, but people with serious brain power and unique ideas: Timeless, Rich, Frank, Denis, Alan, Jaz etc. The list is almost endless. How thrilling would it be if everyone adopted an episode, or two, and we produced a book which offers a ‘plurality of voices’ rather than simply my own limited, monotone one?
Chapters would be about 1,500 – 2,000 words, possibly, and it would allow our virtual community to break out into the real one. I would love to hear from anyone willing to throw their creative/critical hats into the ring. Deadline? 3 months!

Re: Bright Horizons: The Monochrome World of Emma Peel: 1 (The Avengers on Film)

"Just an update to say that ten of the twenty-six episodes are now complete, including excellent offerings from France and the US. There should be a genuine global feel and plenty of variety."

Re: Bright Horizons: The Monochrome World of Emma Peel: 1 (The Avengers on Film)
He says that it will be finished over the next couple of days. He feels guilty that in a new era of film he created a studio-bound episode. I pointed out to him that in The Hour That Never Was and Silent Dust he also provided two of the most location-bound episodes too!

With just seven episodes/chapters left to edit, we are probably looking at the final product being approximately 300 pages in length. A good read, hopefully, for any Avengers fan.

The Bird Who Knew Too Much
From Venus with Love
The See-Through Man
Never, Never Say Die
The Superlative Seven
Something Nasty in the Nursery
Dead Man’s Treasure
The Positive-Negative Man
Mission…Highly Improbable

Rodney au juste de l'intro écrite par son père (sur le livre de la saison 4) : My father's Foreword has arrived and been added to the mix. It offers a fascinating insight into the role of serendipity for a writer and reveals some surprising secrets about The Hour That Never Was. I won't give anything more away.

Amazon allows me to include all contributors as co-authors of the text. This I have done and when people search the book online everyone's name will appear on the smallprint description once you have clicked onto the product itself.
In terms of copyright, each chapter is individually owned by its author, stated clearly in the text itself, while ownership of the book's structure (title, preface, introduction, afterword etc.) belongs to me.
In legal terms the overall copyright officially belongs to all of us mentioned as writers when I set the book's ISBN up a few moments ago. If anyone wanted to reproduce parts of the book e.g. for a thesis they would have to contact me, in the first place, as editor then you if it affected your specific pages.
In terms of profit? Ha, ha! I don't anticipate one. I will be setting the price at 50p above cost price and that way I can cover the cost of paying Jaz to produce another wonderful cover. If we sell beyond 100 copies then I suggest a worthwhile cause for any subsequent money: médecins sans frontières or a similar organisation.

Re: Bright Horizons: The Monochrome World of Emma Peel: 1 (The Avengers on Film)
D'autres précisions :
Amazon offer a ‘virtual publishing’ service. In layman’s terms, I send them the finished product (with cover) on a document file and within 48 hours it is for sale. When someone orders the book they print a copy off. Until an individual buys one, the book doesn’t physically exist.
As the editor it is left to me to select a price, but Amazon dictates the minimum. In the case of Bright Horizons, I have now decided to put it for sale at the minimum amount. I’m not sure what this will be at present as it depends on the size of the book. (Currently 280 pages with three chapters to go). I would guess that it will be about £5-6.
I will be paying Jaz (out of my own pocket) for his cover as I feel that this is a key part of the book. He would create one for free, but that’s not the point. Also, people do judge a book by its cover! If anyone needs proof of that, look at my sales of Subversive Champagne in the US with the Amazon in-house cover (5%) compared to with Jaz’s cover (95%). If we want the widest possible readership then it is the cover which will get people clicking! Jaz kindly created the SC cover for free but I have insisted on paying him ever since. He charges me a very, very modest amount (£50).
I hope I speak for others when I say that this was/is a labour of love rather than a money-making exercise. For this reason I have decided to ensure that the book does NOT make a single penny’s profit. How do others feel about this? I feel very strongly that we have formed an unofficial Avengers on Film collective which has produced a wonderful book...well, almost. (Just three chapters to go!) I don’t want money – and the complex question of whether writers will receive payment or not – to become a factor. The Avengers goes communist, you could say!
Time scale on publication? When I have received the final chapters and Jaz has had time to create the cover I will inform everyone and it should be for sale 48 hours later.
All copyright issues have now been sorted: everyone has his/her own essays copyrighted, the only complication was the French chapters where the original French version is owned by the writer but the translated form has to be jointly owned by me and Bernard/Denis!!
In addition, if anyone who contributed wants a computer file copy of the book once it is complete I will happily send you one.
Despite my best efforts to proof-read I know that one or two errors will go undetected. If anyone spots one then if you e-mail me I will correct it and then change the text online so that future purchasers are error-free!

First day sales:
US 501
France 500
UK 11

Re: Bright Horizons: The Monochrome World of Emma Peel: 1 (The Avengers on Film)
Rodney Marshall: My father wanted to offer some feedback on the book. He loves it! He was so taken by the chapters written on his episodes that he's now reading the book from cover to cover and has even written to Margo to express his delight with the Dial A Deadly Number chapter. He also loved Denis, Dan and Jaz's chapters on his episodes. (He didn't mention mine! )
Rodney Marshall : Silent Dust uses more location filming than any other episode in the season and I love it, particularly the odd asortment of guest characters. Denis Chauvet eloquently defends its cause in Bright Horizons.
Un fan : I have to concur with the views on this page, Silent Dust is a superb episode, quintessential Avengers and part of what made it legendary - great characters, great atmosphere, great locations and the interaction between Steed and Emma is at its cheeky best.
